Im trying to set up a CRS tank and get it cycling but the one thing i dont get is buffering substrates. I only use RO water which is at 7.0 so the substrate im assuming lowers the water to 6.5? What happens when i do water changes? Wouldnt it shock my shrimp cause of the sudden increase in pH? ATM im keeping RCS at 7.0-.1 water with ada amazonia soil so im just a little confused how this buffering substrate works. Thanks for all the help in advance!

You shouldn't use RO water without adding the necessary minerals back, with something like Seachem Equilibrium. You should have at least 2-3 dKH and maybe a bit more GH, being sure you have a significant amount of magnesium and not just calcium.
