I've been learning/experimenting with a mini (5 gal, 27 watt lamp) planted tank for about a year, and now feel ready to proceed with the next challenge: setting up Iwagumi-style tank. For plants I was thinking hc in the foreground and microswords behind the rocks. Also, maybe some pennywort around the rocks. For soil, I'll be using ADA Amazonia (with some Bacter 100 and Tourmaline.) Knowing how tricky Iwagumi maintenance is (I've had huge problems (yep, small tank - big problems) with algae and this layout having no stem plants will be even more difficult) I'd like to ask for some advice in advance:

- CO2: recommendation on dosing... A was thinking a drop per every other second?
- lighting: 27 watt is a mighty lamp for such a small tank, so I was thinking 6 hours
- fertilizer: should I add it just as frequently as I used to with my old tank (which was a mix of everything): Green Brighty and Brighty K, one squirt of each, every other day.

I'll be adding a few japonica shrimp in a couple of weeks and 6-9 tetras in a month or so (if all goes well). Excited to begin the project and appreciate any advice.

CO2 dosing isn't best measured via BPM because that will vary for every tank dependent upon:

Tank Size
Diffusion Method and Execution of that method
Aeration
Pressure
Counter fluid (oil, water, etc)

Etc

For example my 40 Breeder tank pushes 4 BPS (beyond my ability to actually count) and I don't even tickle a yellow drop checker with 4 dkh fluid, whereas someone else might be able to gas their fish at 1 bps...

Look into drop checkers which use 4 dkh water (not tank water - this is a specific hardness we use for this application), PH indicator drops, and the chemical properties of CO2 dissolving into said solution to give you an idea of what your CO2 concentration in the aquarium actually is.

Otherwise, start slow, increase slow, and stop before your fish are suffocating.
