I see a few different kinds... redroot, frogbit, lettuce...salvinia...

Is there a 'prefered'? Do they all act the same way? are any of these going to be a weed plant (that I cant get rid of)

Any reason I WOULDN'T want to add one to my 38 gal?

I've seen the roots on redroot get REALLY long, can I trim them down???

The only thing you'll have problems getting rid of is duckweed. But you didnt list that, so you're good.

Yes, you can trim roots.

I ended up getting rid of my floaters because 1. my snails would devour my redrootfloater completely, and 2. my salvinia would grow so quickly that the entire tank surface would be shaded within a week. I was throwing them out by the handful every week.
