I recently got a 180 gallon tank off craigslist and cannot afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a substrate. I was thinking of going with the following and would like to know if I am hitting some essential nutrients. My base layer would have some osmocote, followed with a layer of organic potting soil, mixed in with safe t sorb and red clay pieces, on top of that the cap would be black diamond blasting sand or regular pool filter sand. Regarding the two sands listed above, will they be soft enough where I will have no issues with my cory cats? I have read reviewed online saying plants grow well in Black Diamond Blasting sand but is a rough edged material and have affected cory's barbels.

Any additional suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
