New Spec 2

Picked up a new in box Spec ii last night off craigslist.
Not a bad find for the $ i don't think.

First nano tank and first post in this section of the forum

Looking forward to the journey on this one.

got it setup last night:
Scooped water out of the 55g to fill.
Pulled a small handful of my seachem matrix of the canister to fill the pockets of the sponge.
Added a golfball size of flame moss and a small ceramic shrimp pyramid.

Also scooped up 4 RCS to inhabit until I figure out the long term plan for the tank.

Plans:
Substrate? Not sure if I will do true root plants may just be moss/anubis/floaters so may go with sand ?
Fauna? Not sure if i can do anything beyond shrimp? super nano fish ?
mods: already plugs the lower filter hole
looking for a better way to layer the media from the overflow down to the bottom
Heater? needed ?

I can let you know what i did with my 2 gallon spec if that helps. I have the theo hydor 25 watt heater in the pump compartment. Perfect fit. For substrate I'm using standard black aquarium gravel. I have a piece of driftwood, a few creeping jenny stems, anubius pettite, a bannana plant, a few small crypts, and a few pieces of narrow leaf hygro. I used one root tab in the gravel and all my plants are doing fine. I originally had a few cpd in there but I felt it was too small. Now I just have some rcs in the tank. I also just added some riccia floating in there which the shrimp seem to enjoy.

@frankie - Def looking at adding a heater. since I am not sure on the exact mix of fauna yet.

Leaning towards some sort of sandy bottom and just floaters or stem type plants.

Anyone changed out the stock light?

or

Changes out the stock sponge filter setup ?
At minimum here i am thinking of ditching the sponge tower, just use the bottom bit then layer in a piece of floss, then bagged matrix.

If your looking to change out the media you could use a tray like this.

Personally I think it's kinda high on the price mark. I'm using the stock setup with bio balls in the bottom and purigen in the top.

yeah seems a bit on the high side. but super nice looking. also I think I am going to hit up H4N and get a bit of stainless to cover the intake with some shrimplet proof.

though would rather find a Spec 3 or 5 on clearance.

Yeah if they had the 3 or 5 for sale.....I definitely would have picked a couple of them up, but they only had the 2 on clearance.

Funny, I just bought the Spec 2 at Petsmart today for their clearance at $30. There were 2 more... I was really tempted. However, I already had another item in my cart... They had a black Fluval Edge 6 gallon LED style on clearance for $76. I did not go in that store expecting to buy two Fluval tanks but damn. Price too good to pass.

Hope your Spec goes well! I'm using mine for plastic plants at the moment so it will stay pretty. If I had a desk job I'd put it there.

They had the same deal by me on the spec 2. Went to both stores in my area but both sold out!
