I'm reading in a few places, that the roots should be cut before planting?

Could someone please shed some light on this?

I always cut roots before planting. Makes it easier to plan and they grow right back. It's good practice also, I believe they call it 'teasing'. It frees the roots so they can grow out as they wish instead of a bunch like they probably are prior to cutting.

I usually only tend to cut roots when they were growing in the aquarium already. I just plant the plant with roots if it's new.
