Glad to have you here bud! I'm in Jackson. Always nice to see a fella from Mississippi. As can see, the MS posts are few and far between but it's all good. We don't have to count numbers, just make the numbers count!

Hello HD...

Welcome. Spent time in Meridian back in the late 70s. Was at the Navy's PN "A" School for a few weeks. Was there in November and December. A little windy and wet that time of year.

Welcome,
I have a brother in Poplarville. He used to be in Waveland till Katrina.
The infamouse Shoreline Park..."Land you can walk on before you buy".
I'm near the home of "Lil Abner" in Arkansaw. Our state part of the forum doesn't get that much traffic either. But when you live in a third world aria, the whole aria is your aquarium. LOL...

No fish stores here in Jackson either except for 2 Petsmarts and a Petco. Oh there's a locally owned saltwater store but it doesn't do me much good. The Petco here is good though. The people there are fish people. Rarely see a dead fish.

Holy moly, this thread came alive quick! I def do plants, used to breed dwaf cichlids/CA/SA cichs/angels when I was living in Hattiesburg. Agreed on throwing out stems. I'm down for trades and ROAK, don't really like selling to other hobbyists. Y'all ever get together? John and Breezy I have a friend from the PetSmart in Hattiesburg that might be willing to do a meet-up for plant trading - if there's interest. I JUST started dabbling in growing plant's emmersed. And right now I'm working on dirted tanks. Also with a slow-growers Anubias/ferns/bucephalandra low-tech. Just ordered a bunch of less common anubias for this set-up. And I'm waiting on the Buces.

I'm not aware of there ever being a meetup anywhere. Honestly I didn't know this many people were this active on the for from MS.

I'm just over 1 year into the hobby and I'm doing my second tank now. It's my project of sorts. My 29 gallon tank has some random Java ferns in it. About 5 or 6 plants in it that are ok but this 55 gallon project will recieve some real tlc. I'm going to do miss, anubias, some ferns and something else. Should be a fun project. It has been so far.

Lol, there really aren't any I know of either, just me and the Aquatics staff at the Hattiesburg PetSmart. I lived there for a few years before I recently moved back to Philadelphia. I used to live in Canton before that The two PetSmarts there were alright back then. I know that at least a few of the Hattiesburg PetSmarters would probably be willing to meet-up at some point just to chat. There's only one other than me that has gotten into plants seriously and I'm sure he'd be down as well. I have some ponds/streams around my house I collect plants from during the warm months. I'll put a list together for you if you are interested in any. Maybe in the spring we can get a few trips together to do some collecting from the various areas we live in?

Yeah that's cool. That's something that never crossed my mind, getting plants from local water. I bet there are nice varieties out there once you stop and take time to notice. Would probably take some serious work though to learn the requirements of each. Like I said, I'm getting ready to do a big plant project. If you have an idea of something that would go good in this tank let me know.

Regarding your tank. What most people suggested on your original thread is pretty sound help/suggestions. Personally, I would ditch the rock, honestly... and the background, lol. But that is a personal choice. If you like the background though try adding some plants to it, like java ferns, Anubias or, even better, moss(es)! You can buy clumps of it online and attach them here and there creating a more natural look. You can staple it wherever you want and the staples will rust adding iron to your water column(a very important nutrient for plants). I would buy some sword plants( genus Echinodorus) from your local pet stores, they are pretty cheap and can be separated to make multiple plants. It would be better to hit up your PetCo because they still utilize the actual plant tanks - so you can get a good idea about the plants before purchasing. Some Valisneria would look really nice too, maybe behind a stand of swords. I like the look of different planes in the same tank... for example, using rocks and substrate to create plateaus for planting on either side then leaving kind of a valley or, ravine in the middle. It is a better use of space than planting in a straight line.

Happy Bday bud! My plan is to grab some plants tomorrow too. Either up here or down there. I went to petco last night. They must have had a huge plant sale last week. The options were a bit limited. I'll be checking online today to see if there are any deals.

If you or any of your guys have some extras from clipping I'd make an offer on them. Just let me know.
