So I want to start a small planted tank. I have a 10g that measures 20Lx10Wx12H. The tank was originally from the aqueon 10 kit that comes with the hood, etc. Unfortunately the hood is broken so I was planning to get a new one. Any suggestions?

If the cover on the top of the tank is black plastic, with a clear panel for the light to shine through, I suggest discarding the cover, and making one from acrylic or, preferably glass. You will get a lot more light into the tank that way, from any light.

A two bulb T8 light will work well sitting on top of the tank. A pair of screw-in CFL spiral bulbs, mounted horizontally, with 13-23 watts will also work well, with the higher wattage giving you high light where you need CO2.

I figured it out, one is "cool white" and one is "soft white". Which one is better for a planted tank? And also are these bulbs alright to begin with? thanks!

The hood is the cheapo all glass aquarium made in WI hood.

This is what it looks like. You can probably get one for 20$

I also have that hood, and I ordered these bulbs for it (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GBIVXG). Does your hood also have the little curved plastic coverings over the two bulbs? And did you find that the mini twist bulbs you linked fit into them? That was one of my concerns with the bulbs I ordered. Their specs say they're 1.81in wide...

Where did you buy your bulbs?
Petsmart. Just try to get bulbs close to 6500K. Mine are 5000ish K but they work. Avoid 50/50 bulbs. Actinic does nothing for plants.

Petsmart carries Aqueon bulbs also. The Colormax ones work also. Check the Kelvin number.

I got these because they are narrow and fit well.

I already ordered these (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GBIVXG) bulbs. Do you think they would work/fit an economy hood? If they don't I can easily use them around the house, but jw all the same.
