Hello,

I need a new filter recommendation. I have a 30 gallon, planted community tank. I have an underground filter that is to remain. My main filter is an old (12+ years), Marineland/Penguin power filter, size 300/350. It is rated for up to a 75 gallon tank. This filter has worked very well. It has two bio-wheels and 4 internal cartridges that I simply use the foam inserts. The filter hangs on the back of the tank.

Being that this filter is 10+ years old, I’m wondering if there have been any advances in filtration. I’ve looked at the new versions of this filter and they seem to be a little cheaper and I’m not sure they would hold up as well. Filtration is very important so I want to make sure I get a really good one for the tank.

What does everyone else use or recommend?

I use canister filters on all of my tanks big or small, HOB (hang on back) filters are in my opinion are outdated; I recommend going with a SunSun Hw-302 3-stage canister filter, because they're low cost, and are amazingly quiet, work very well with clearing the water.

No doubt a canister is quieter and better at getting clear water because the water is force through whatever mechanical part it has and likely it just has more of it also.
But if you wanted to stay/w an HOB then this one has consistent good reviews(on here) for long life and ease of use plus you can choose the filter materials.

IMO, unless there's something actually wrong with your filter, there's really no need to replace it. Unless you plan to start using CO2 on this tank- in which case, a canister filter would be a much better option as they won't outgas the CO2 like most HOB filters will.

If you're set on replacing it, however, my own personal favorite out of the HOB filters are the AquaClears. Tons of room for media, and you can customize the media however you like rather than being locked into buying brand-specific filter cartridges.

Out of canister filters, Rena XP and Eheim Classics are my favorites by far. A little more pricey than some of the other options, but IMO they're well worth it in user-friendliness and reliability over time.

I am the opposite of UnRated. I think canister filters are over-rated as far as being considered vastly superior to HOB filters. Maybe 20 years ago, but today's HOB filters are quite powerful/effective.

I use all sorts of various HOB filters to get a sense of what each can offer/do. My favorite has been my AquaClear. I hear the Fluval C Series filtration is on the same level as entry level canisters.

I also use an Aqueon filter, a Tetra Whisper filter, and an internal pump setup. To me it is all about media customization. Does said filter allow for not only good flow/GPH, but can I setup my own filter media ideas in them. The hardest to do this with for me has been filters designed for cartridges.

With all that said, I would like to try a canister setup someday soon.

I'm pretty sure the pump/motor is going on my current filter. It been having issues the last few months.. seems to be moving less water and i've done multiple cleanings w/no improvement. It's also getting pretty loud which make me think it's just wearing out. I'm sure filtration tech has improved some in the last 12-15 years... right?

Honestly? Not really.

Sounds like your filter probably just needs a new impeller. Usually a cheap and easy fix if your filter is still on the market.

Yep.. i'm going to get the parts to fix my existing filter. It's working well so not going to rock the boat.
