The sand is way too brilliantly white. A darker color would look much better. There is also too much sand area. It can either be minimized or you can place an island formation on it like this:

Ok I can see about putting a driftwood piece in the middle of the sand area to break it up. I rearranged the heater so I'll post a pic later.

You may want to add a more elaborate island formation. You have a funky shape of sand, almost looks like a knife. I hope you'll consider changing the color of the sand because it's just glaring too much.

I like the layout. The sand is glaring but I think that might be from the camera not from the actual light reflecting of the sand. I would spread some more carpet plants in the empty areas to the left of the tank and maybe some larger plants like some amazon swords behind them as back ground plants.
If it makes you happy that's all that matters.

Another question, what is the fastest/easiest growing carpet plant that a store like petsmart would sell?

And by fastest I mean spreading out not growing up...

A tan color such as #20 blasting sand would look okay. Easy from Petsmart: Eleocharis parvula but it may not suit the tank. HC would be better if they sell pots of it.
