I'm getting this:

Gonna be a nice upgrade from a 5 gallon, but it'll have to wait because its $125 now and its going on clearance soon at Petsmart.
Really excited about the T5s :)
Anyone have any suggestions for maybe something a little cheaper?

I was actually looking at the same tank i really like the complete set up. I think the only difference is the T5 lighting right? Also what light level would this be?
I'm assuming that the light is a T5NO one, so it would have medium light, perfect, in other words.
Ninja'd!
I had to buy this a while back when I saw the $100 price tag. They had 4 and they all sold within the week.

I'm really happy with it. It seems to be good for low light. I did replace the filter with a sunsun, though.

How do you know it's going on clearance?

Why is that perfect? lol

I work at a petsmart, unfortunately.

Oh now that's just not fair. LOL
BTW, how did that fish of the month thing work out for Petsmart?

We have special buy fish that get swapped out every three months if that's what you mean. They do alright but not too many people buy them.

What about live plants? My local Petsmart has a pretty good selection, but if I wanted something special can the department head order it for me or do they have to stick with their normal stock?
Anyways... this set comes with an aqueon filter and heater glass canopy and dual T5s. Would it be worth the $90-$100 I would get it for after clearance and 15% disco, or would it be better to get it all separate?
How would those lights be for like HC or mini pellia?
Also, for this one I would set up a co2 reactor and ditch the DIY yeast one I have now.

Normal stock

Medium light is perfect because it doesn't create an uncontrollable algae farm.

It's like buying Sgt. Pepper's on iTunes. You would get all the songs from the original album for $12.99, but if you bought MP3s ($1.29 each) of only the "good" songs on the album instead you could swap out "Good Morning Good Morning", "Within You Without You", and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" for "Let It Be", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", and "In My Life" and -- I would argue -- a better collection of songs for a few dollars more. Same with the prepackaged aquarium kit. You could put together components that would arguably be better (than the kit), but you might also pay a bit more.

BTW, my recollection of the measurements of a 25G aquarium is 24L x 12W x 20H, but the image of the box you uploaded indicates a 24 x 13 x 19H tank. Could be a rounding issue, not sure. Just keep in mind if the tank is actually 13" wide, some of the stands built for 20G/25G (24L x 12W) aquariums might not fit properly.

Going from a 5G aquarium to a 25G tank will open up alot of possibilities for you, but then you'll start eyeing that 45G/55G or 125G tank on sale the day after Christmas...

Small apartment. No room for anything larger and I think its going on clearance in January. How much more would we be talking for the arguably better setup?

Better -- as with beauty -- is in the eyes of the beholder. You can always spend more (and often a lot more) and get a bigger aquarium, better filtration, better lighting, etc., but that doesn't mean you have to or should. If you haven't done so, take a look a the Planted Nano Tank and the Low Tech sections -- there are some really good ideas in those parts of the forum and many of them are relatively inexpensive.

Going from a 5G to a 25G aquarium is a pretty good jump. Don't forget you'll need funds to stock the new aquarium. With the included dual T5 lighting (28 watts total?) and an aquarium with decent height (19" or 20") you should be able to grow a decent selection of plants. Spend some money on a quality (plant-friendly) substrate and plants from a reputable LFS (also helps if you have friends who are willing to give you trimmings).

Is 28W enough lighting for that size tank? Shouldn't it be more? I wouldn't wanna go bigger tank or canister filter either I don't have money for all that yet. As far as plants/livestock I would probably get most of them from SnS or friends. Probably some type of soil or flourite or a mix of the two (any suggestions welcome).

From my perspective the issue is the following (ignoring fish):

1. Either buy the aquarium kit that you had previously described and find plants that will thrive in a 25G tank using the stock lighting; or,

2. Figure out what aquatic plants you really want to grow, determine their lighting, water quality, fertilizer/CO2, size, and substrate requirements, and then purchase the appropriate items.

#2 will likely be the more expensive route and the difference could be significant. It might also mean you end up with a 37G aquarium, a cannister filter, etc., instead of the 25G aquarium kit.

If you buy the 25G kit with (what I'm assuming is) @28 Watt (total) dual T5 lamps, you should find be able to find appropriate plants that can thrive in lighting that amounts to a bit more than 1Watt per gallon. Java Fern, Java Moss, Annubias, and Crypts call all grow in low light. You could, of course, upgrade the stock lighting to more powerful lighting down the road (24" dual T5 HO, for instance, which is @48 watts) but at some point after doing so you'll introduce the need for CO2.

Like so many others, I started out with a 10G (20Lx10Wx12H) aquarium years ago. After a while, I wanted more plants, more fish, etc., so I upgraded to a 20H tank (24Lx12Wx 16H). Because of the significant difference between the 2 aquariums, I had to upgrade the lighting, filtration, and heater. That wasn't cheap. Big mistake on my part -- I should have opted for a much larger aquarium (45G, 36Lx12Wx24H) right off the bat instead of buying that 20H, which was really just an intermediate upgrade. Oh well, live and learn.
