Hi I am thinking about getting some nerite snails to help with algae control. How do you determine how many you need for a tank? Also what do you feed them when the algae is gone? Thanks

There are many many types of nerite snails on the market right now. They're becoming more and more popular in the freahwater world mostly for two reasons.

-they are amazing algae control
-their young do not survive in freshwater

They can vary in size. Some of the horned species max out at only half of an inch while others can grow beyond two inches in diameter. They "one inch per gallon rule" loosley applies to snails in addition to fish. If you post what species you'll be getting, I can help you more with the "how many" aspect. What size is the tank? Please list the number and species of the current inhabitants.

When the algae is "gone", you can toss in an algae wafer or two. Here is an example of some algae wafers:

Interesting, I need to get some of these snails.
I think a lot of times when nerites and other snails are eating on the glass sides they are really eating the biofilm and not algae. You can tell their eating something even if you can't see algae from all the pooping they do.
Hi thanks for the help
Honestly there are so many cool looking nerites I am not sure which to go with
I am having algae issues with two tanks.
The first a 26 bowfront lightly planted with one four inch ruby red spilo piranha. I was thinking maybe the clithion corona or another horned type or possibly red spot or zebra? I was also thinking about adding one pomacea bridgesii for the fun of it.

The second is a medium planted 120 gallon with a 16 inch fahaka. I am fighting a loosing battle to algae in this tank. I wanted to try one of the larger nerite sp in that tank. I have heard they have pretty hard shells and my puffer may not be able to eat them. Which ones get to be the largest?

Thanks

I would be interested in hearing more about these types. Right now, I have Zebra's, Ruby's, Olive's and Horned Nerites. What other types are there?

I would go with a larger than the Clithion Corona Nerite, they grow to about a 1/2" at most. I have them in my smaller tanks, you would need a TON of them for a 120 gal. I have had GREAT luck with Tracked Nerites, they are amazing at algae eating.

Bumble bee Nerites as well, they look much like the horned nerite, but the shell is rougher, and without horns. They are also yellow and black striped
Any snail will be nothing more than a snack for the fahaka puffer.

I feed mine apple snails that are 1.5 inches in diameter. And my fahaka is only around 12-13".
