Just for the record I have nitrates over 50ppm in my shrimp tank. The shrimp breed like crazy. But this is all from dosing dry salts like No3. Completely different than naturally occurring nitrates from decomposition. It's not the nitrates that kill the shrimp it's what came before it to get to 20ppm. Have you tested your tap nitrates?
