I bought a nano HOB filter for my aquarium, but the outlet's flow was too strong for my betta even on the lowest setting. Are there any dependable ways to buffer it? I don't want to use a plastic bottle, because the bottle's cut edges seem risky. Putting a plant in front of it didn't seem very effective. Or should I just look for a different filter?

You can place a sponge on the intake part of the filter and it will slow the flow. The more dense the foam, the more flow restriction there will be.

A thin flat piece of sponge tied under the outflow may diffuse it without reducing the overall filtering. Letting the filter pads get dirty before changing will do it for sure?
