I don't think it's a big deal. Just set the heater for 72, wait for a few hours, set to 74, wait for a few, and so on.

Probably wouldn't be a big deal if you let the heater heat the water as fast as it can, but it couldn't hurt to slow down the process a bit.

He can't set the heater it's preset.

1 hour on one hour off should be ok I would just watch it and shoot for 1 degree an hour

If its the same stupid little heater from Wally world I have it should only get too 76 but then again I'm running 2 of them in a 72g

If you have the time, the fish will be better if the temperature goes up slowly over a day or so. Do you have a way to let some heat bleed off. Anything like opening lids, turning off lighting or increasing the splash? A water change might be a way to keep it from going too high too quickly. I assume your tap water comes in cooler than the tank?? A water change at this time may be good anyway. My thinking is about the way the fish react to warm water as well as warmer water holds less O2 than cool. Many times there is a panic to get the temperature back up but that can be death for the fish. They are often better to stay just a bit cool for a day or so.

I gradually brought it from 72 to 75. It's the wally world one and it shut off at 76.
Hopefully it wasn't to stressfull. Not to keen on those heaters- that is why it is a spare.

Heaters with no thermostat can be run with a timer. Set the timer to go on and off as the room temperature varies. The lights on the tank may also warm it, some.

For example, on for an hour, then off half an hour through the night, and on for maybe as little as 15 minutes at a time through the day, and off perhaps for an hour. The lights can keep a small tank quite warm, though dropping to 70* does not sound too hopeful.

see all those red and green pins? You can add more and more of them, and set a lot of on/off cycles.
