native plants

Ok. I’m thinking about using native plants from the lake we live on. I’m definitely on a budget since my recent medical problems have left me not being able to drive for 6 months, go to work, or school, not to mention I’ll be transferring to a university in the fall. Needless to say my resources are quite limited, at best. The lake is frozen right now but I was told that the best time to harvest native plants is when the lake it frozen. Just cut a hole in the ice and pull them out. Because it’s winter they are storing all their energy and you’re less likely to loose them during this time. I don’t know if that’s true. That’s just what I was told.

Anyway, we have some great looking moss and tons of what appears to be Cabomba caroliniana and Vallisneria spiralis ''Tiger''. I’ve harvested the cabomba and vals before. I got the vals to stay alive after several attempts. Have any of you experimented with native plants before?

Haha, yes I have! I found some really cool Potamogeton sp. and a few other plants which I've yet to id, I think it'd be so cool to set up a natives only tank. There are LOTS of good species out there too. Just a warning though...

... that's how I ended up with Wolfia in my tank! It's like duckweed only 10xs smaller and meaner

I've gathered some Ludwigias, Polygonums, Potamagetons, Najas sp., you name it.

When you're cutting a hole in the ice just be careful not to fall in.

I've gathered a plant that looks similar to Anarchis in the past, and it did ok.

That's not a problem, hehe! I stood on the dock and used a shovel to dig into the ice. That's how I found out that the ice frozen all the way to the bottom. I might have to find our ice fishing hole maker and walk out off the dock so I have actually get to water.
