The thread explaining what I kinda wanted to try is here:
http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/low-tech-forum/97868-returning-n00blet.html#post955104

I just ran a quickstrip on our tap water:

0 Nitrate and Nitrite
75 hardness
0 cholrine
120 Alk
7.8 Ph

Is that PH too high for low-tech plants? And if it is, are there any substrates that can help lower it?

edit; Im leaning towards Eco-Complete Black (the tank is a undecided 20 or 30 gallon as it will be purchased on friday)

I wouldn't worry about the pH. Probably shouldn't get any Toninas or Erios, and Vals will probably love your water, and that's about it. Acclimate new fish slowly and everything else should work fine.
