i've decided they're useless....they eat just about everything EXCEPT the algae in my tank. maybe mine just doesn't have a taste for algae, mine literally craws over the glass areas that have it...take like two bites and keep crawling never even slowing down for it. and they crap all over the place like nobody's business! they poop more than all of my fish combined!!!

glad i only ever invested in one of these critters.

They are not known for the algae eating skills. But they have great personalities, very cute, and good for cleaning up uneaten food. All that poop came from food that was over fed. So better poop then uneaten food.
I use them to cycle tanks because they poop so much. Theyre mostly a novelty. Some of the purple ones or white ones are super cool looking especially when they get huge.
I like my purple ones, and I have one that is super white that's pretty neat looking.

Some of my baby purples have turned into golds though, bleh. No clue why they changed colors, their shell did start out purple.

I have one baby that is white with purple stripes, I really hope he keeps that color pattern, never seen that before.
I have two in a 5.5 gallon. Right now, they're my favorite animal out of my 8 tanks. They are so active, cute, and intruiging. They nibbled on all my plants except my one Amazon Sword. I'll be replanting the tank with about 4 more Amazon Swords in the future, LOL.

They poop a lot! But, if you keep up with water changes it shouldn't be an issue.

Only one thing ticks me off about them. A few weeks ago I came home with 5 guppy fry which I put in the tank with the snails. Everyday when I woke up, I found one more missing. So there's that. And, now they're all gone so.......I have decided to make it a snail only tank. Planning on adding one blue, one purple, one white, one black, and maybe a gold, all juvies. So, this is going to be very entertaining...

But they are so cool! :) I cant get enough of snails. Amazing little creatures.
I recently realized that though I've been blaming my clown pleco for uprooting plants, it's more likely a couple of mystery snails that have been violently disagreeing with me over new plant placement.
Some species of apple snails are known to eat plants, maybe you got that one :(

Yeah, I've seen them do this before. They're not purposely uprooting them though. They like to dig themselves into the gravel before they "sleep" and when they decide to do so next to a stemmed plant that usually ends up uprooting them. I hate them for that too!!!:angryfire
Mine don't touch any plants, only dead/dying plants, and I have about 30 of them. Some that are bigger then a golf ball.

This they do. Especially when food gets under the substrate surface.
My mystery snail liked to crawl over everything. Because of him wanting to crawl on the big leaves, like my anubias, he pulls them out of the gravel. Its hard to keep anubias in the substrate versus having them tied to rock or wood.
I just LOVE these guys...it is soooo cool to watch them sail across a tank! I have several colors...Ivory, Purple striped, and Magenta.

My Magenta female has given me 4 clutches in the last 6 months....I now have lots of marble sized ivories and magenta's with white feet and bodies. The Magenta is a lovely pink/lavendar color without stripes. She probably mated with my ivory male, because I got half ivory and half magenta's....so these new clutches will have both again as she was with the same male in my tank. She is the size of a golf ball.
