Can anyone tell me what this stuff is and why it looks like crap? The leaves are withering and are crusty and brittle. I've tried tried adding GH booster, upped CO2, uped and downed my EI ferts, played with extra potasium and NO3 alone. Just can't seem to figure it out and thinkin of throwin it away!

I've also got this stuff that I also don't know what it is but it's growin like wild!!!!! Thought the BBA outbreak I had would kill it but it's taking off! New growth everywhere! I just can't get over it!

Any ideas?

The red one is Alternanthera reineckii, the second one Rotala rotundifolia/indica. Might be the photo, but the Rotala looks a bit starved (not green). Alternanthera can be a bit difficult to figure out. I have it growing alright in my medium light tanks, but the lower leaves always turn a bit ratty, and I think snails are all over this plant, must be tasty. Try to plant a single stem somewhere rather than a big bush. Once it grows cut it about 2" from the bottom and wait for new growth. Or something.
What do you think the Rotala could be starving of? It is a little greener in real life but not a whole bunch.

Ok, bought Fluorish Iron this evening and dosed 2X the bottle directions. Also added 1/4 tsp KNO3 in addition to EI regimin I'll continue with tomorrow. Also, I had one of the stems of Alternanthera reineckii planted off by itself for about a week or so now. Cut about 5" off the top (2" below the new leaves that looked ok) and re-planted that off by itself too. No more rhyme or reason to where things are planted now. Just wanting to propogate some plants to xfer to my 29G once I save enough $ for Fluorite Sand Black to do the whole tank. Then I'm gonna build another hood and transfer all of my gear. I'll have more vertical room to grow and I'm hoping by then, I'll have plenty of healthy plants to start with. Camboba already needs to be trimed in half again and re-planted. That stuff grows well for me too! Oh yea, I bought a bunch of Red Ludwigia from Petsmart today and planted them too. At this rate, I'll have a 29G full of marsalla sp., Ludgiwia (if it grows) comboba, Rotallia, wisteria, pennywort, moneywort, corkscrew val, and crypt of some dark maroon description. Guess is could be worse! Does everyone go though this trial and error to see what they can get to grow b4 ending up with their final scape and flora? Geezzz this can be a pain!

It sounds like you're on the right track as far as learning to listen to your plants for their needs and adjusting. I'm still learning this method, too, and I'm starting to figure it out. I'm sure your ludwigia will grow like a weed, it seems to be a relatively easy plant(so easy i had to get rid of mine because it was taking over my tanks). It may seem like a pain trying to balance the different needs of different plants sometimes, but it's part of the fun, right? (or maybe I'm just a little bit crazy!)
When and if I get it figured out, I will be able to call it fun. Fun normally comes with a sense of accomplishment. Constant failure doesn't seem to be too much fun though! Or maybe my expectations after looking at soooo many beautiful tank pics here are too high for being 3 or 4 months into this zany world of fish and plants. Oh, and did I mention that I also bought some Seachem root tabs and stuck them near my bushes? We'll see if that helps too!

I haven't tried root tabs yet, but plenty of people have success with them, so I hope you do, too. I guess what I've come to realize is that most of the "perfect" tank shots are just a fleeting moment in time. Sure, it's possible to keep a tank looking good, but most of the really amazing shots you see are after careful growing out and strategic trimming and wouldn't last for very long. So, I guess I try to just enjoy the progress of my tanks as they fill in and change. And don't worry, most of us "fail" a ton of the time, too!
Well, that sounds nice but I would consider your 50 a "perfect tank" compared to mine! That type of lush flora is what I've been chasing. Perhaps someday.:icon_sad:
