my tds...

...is through the roof!!! :eek5: I tested it for the very first time today and it is 276. Which now explains why I have not been able to get my shrimp to breed for the past 3 months. The only thing I can think is there are just some random stones in there. Should I take these out? My tap water reads 125. But we filter that extra and our drinking water reads 74. Someone please help! How do I lower this?

N,

No need to panic. Lets get the ph/gh/kh (both tank and tap) and see how to approach this.

If you change water, you'll likely just dilute what's in the tank and remineralize. If you were really in a jam, poland spring or any distilled bottle water would do.
The ph is 7.4 -7.6 but unfortunately my kh/gh test will not be here until tomorrow. Should i just leave it until then?
Do you use that same water to top off the tank (to compensate for evaporation)?
What kind of shrimp? 3 months is just about the settle in time for shrimp to settle in sometimes and my RCS are breeding fine in a 350TDS, so TDS isn't everything.
BabyDragon has Rilis.

If ammonia, nitrates and nitrides are through the roof, then that would prompt a quick WC...

Otherwise, I think they should be okay for now... so you could wait until you get your testers in tomorrow.
I have red rilis. And I have had quite a few berried females drop eggs. They don't hold them for more than 2 hours. I also do not do top offs. I don't have that much evaporation. The AC runs in my room all day. I have a full hood and the tank stays around 72 to 74.
Can you get the numbers for ammonia, nitrates and nitrides?
That TDS with Rilis can be managable. I would assume it is something else
Uhh... 276 isn't through the roof at all. I had RCS breeding at ~330TDS before I switched to RO/DI water.

My tds is at 330 atm with TT's and Rilis, both are breeding fine right now. You should post your other params
I won't beat a dead horse by asking for the other parameters, which you'll obviously need to provide.

But want to chime in and say that I have Neos in 475ish TDS (yellows, even) that breed really well. Also have crystals in 400tds and while they aren't prolific, they breed and do pretty well. So definitely don't worry too much about TDS.
The tap water around here is 450ish which is why I don't use it at all. The lfs where I bought my CRS are in that water and they look healthy and have always been pretty hardy. I keep my CRS in 150-200 tds.
