My shrimp (Blue Velvet) are being nocturnal?

Hello everyone,

I have finally gotten my 38 Gallon setup and have mostly clear water after my 26 Gallon near disaster,
Anyway I purchased 10 Blue Velvet Shrimp (A blue variety of RCS from my understanding) some nice looking guppys and pair of Endlers all from my LFS. I got them all on Tuesday and the fish look very happy.

My concern is the shrimp, I have only seen a few of them out during the day but as soon as the lights go out they seem to swarm the tank. Most of them are fairly small and not yet mature, although they do have their coloring. Is this normal behavior for a new shrimp (RCS) colony? From what i have read they are supposed to be pretty active during the day.

I should note that the LFS's water had no GH (reading of 0 on my test kit) and i have a GH of about 150 ppm, is that why they are acting strange? I did do a drip line acclimation until their GH was ~80 and gave them about an hr at 80ppm. The tank temp is 78.5F, 0 nitrites, 0 ammonia, and ~5ppm nitrate. My PH is 7.2 and KH is 100ppm. As a note their PH was about 6.8.

My lighting should be ~50 par at the gravel. (New LED light from Fluval, has the PAR listed on the box at certain depths.

I do plan on picking another 10-15 up on Friday. I have never been the this LFS before (1-1.5hr drive) but has been liked by a few on this forum. I didn't get 20-25 to start with so that if the shrimp all died I wouldn't be out $60+ on shrimp ($3.49 a piece). So far I am happy except for the nocturnal shrimp...

They might be inactive during the day due to the fish and feel more comfortable in the cover of darkness. Also a new tank setup can do that.

That makes perfect sense! Thanks! Hopefully they will adjust and get comfortable as the plants grow in. They are really pretty and i would hate to only see a few of them every now and again.

I think so. And they are often shy when they dicover their new home. My blue dreams stay hidden 3 days after I put them in their tank. They are now wandering all around, especially as they are alone, no fish.

Good information to know! Even after all I read I saw no mention of them taking that long to adjust. I only read that if they were inactive then something was really wrong. I saw a couple more of them out today, so it seems the larger ones are adjusting.
