my first dirted project

alright guys , as some of you may know petco is having the dollar a gallon sale .. i went out and got myself a 40 breeder and am going to attempt to use miracle grow natures care potting mix with a black diamond sand blasting sand cap , i plan to have this tank be viewed from both sides . for hard scape i have some ohko stones and on the way i have 2 manzanita branches , i thought i might use this thread to keep everyone who cares updated on my progress ... ive already saturated and wrung out the potting soil it is now laying out to dry .. im not sure if that is quite neccesary but im sure it will keep my water a little clearer in the beginning .. i hope to have the substrate down and water in the tank by tomorrow night .. hard scape is going to have to wait until i know what my manzanita branches are going to look like ... anyway if youve read through my horrible writing you are probably wanting pictures

built the stand and after it sat for a day it seemed to have warped slightly ... sooo i went and bought some shims and a piece of lexan to support the one corner of the tank that was everso slightly up off the stand then i put a 5mm yoga mat down then the tank , now everything is level and stable with absolutley no wobble .. alot of these plants will be transfered to the new tank but im not so sure about the layout im looking for

if anyone has suggestions feel free to chime in ... thanks for looking guys

Maybe a iwugami or dutch style set up. I will be following good luck but will be fun

just filled it up today .... looks like i got lucky no floaters and my water isnt a cloudy mess .. hardscape will be readjusted when the rest of it shows up

its going to be a mish mash i want long stem plants along the sides of the tank and carpet plants surrounding the rocks along with a moss tree made from manzanita branches

Well it looks like you're already on your way.

I was going to post a bit of a cautionary story about my dirted experience. I've been battling algae in my DTS and 'streamsoil' dirted tank since it was started.

It's just now getting itself balanced enough that the plants are doing better than the algae. The problem I see with MiracleGrow is that it has far more un-mineralized organics than the mineralized yard soil I used in my tank.

Sounds good, what type of moss on the tree? anchor moss?

i really like the look of flame moss but its probably going to come down to what i can find locally

mhm I understand... flame moss on a tree for me personally would be hard to see, as it doesn't spread as much as it grows upwards.... Christmas moss is my suggestion to you, in the long run it will look really nice If trimmed the way you want it >

Is this considered a vendor review of Petco or the Aquarium manufacturer( Good, bad or ugly)? I guess in this situation, it would be good. If so, will this post be removed?

here it is 10 hours after filling the tank ... more plants have been added and a few moved , the water has not been cloudy at all , its actually clearer than my other tank haha

I asked if Petco had a 8 fish limit and it got removed as being a vendor review.
I was told that vendor reviews are not allowed( good, bad, or ugly)

I am wondering if I can get clarification on what exactly is considered a vendor review vs talking about what is going on at Petco,Petsmart, etc... Such as sales going on, promotions, etc...

Is talking about any vendor such as Petco, Petsmart,etc.. considered a vendor review?
