The wood looks fine either way, I just think you either need more of it, or some rocks/plants at the base to smooth its transition into the soil to make it look more natural.

Definately rocks or plants at the base; should make it a nice focal point. I'm guessing you're dry starting... interested to see how this turns out.
get some moss coating the wood! otherwise a great start!
I like it! Maybe consider a Needle-leaf Java fern behind the colorata, around the base of the wood... they look cool when they engulf jetting pieces of wood like yours. =)
Wow looks really good. As many others have suggested a plant on the wood would really drive the scape home. Good jon :)
