My DIY 10G canopy

this is how I made a 10 gallon DIY canopy for about $20 in materials from any hardware store:

The canopy just rests on top of the tank, because it's on a 10g tank I remove it completely for water changes and cleaning. The design is pretty scalable, you could do the same thing with as many light sockets and lights for any size tank. I've been growing plants really well with this setup, I could have easily spent a lot more money on something that wouldn't have worked much better.

I've been growing rotala, java ferns, crypts and val very well with DIY CO2 injection and root tabs. I prune the rotala at least once a week and the val about once a month, it hasn't really taken off but it's starting to spread and fill in the left side of the tank a little bit, I really just want to keep the val going until I can get my 55g setup then I'll move it over to the 55g and replace it with something else.

you can build it a little bit larger to fully cover the top black rim. I think it look much better in my opinion
I could have, but the scraps of wood I had were just big enough for what I did. Down the road I'll build another one with some other bells and whistles that will cover the trim, for now this does just fine.
Looks good. I did something similar recently, but much slimmer (didn't use screw-ins). I also fit it into the inside of the black rim so it sits securely. Going to paint it in a dark color to go with the rest of the furniture. Have you considered painting the outside?
I really prefer natural wood finishes, I'm going to put a coat of polyurethane on it once the garage warms up enough. I could stomache water based latex paint at the kitchen table, I don't think I could handle oil based urethane without ventilation though.

I was just going the saw the same thing. However you did do a nice job.
