Cycling the tank

Trying to cycle the tank added an old filter cartridge from my Aqueon 8. Checked the water parameters the PH 7.6,NO2 0,NO3 0 Ammonia 0 and did a 90% water change to get rid of the tannins.
Changed the filter cartridge with an older one from my Aqueon 8 added a piece of shrimp for ammonia source going to check water parameters later.
very nice tank, the only critique I have is to move the thermometer to the side so you don't see it from a front on view. very neat and healthy looking so far, I like the dark substrate, looks like a perfect home for a pair of german blue rams

Thanks for the compliment Im pretty happy with the tank can't wait for the cycle to end so I can add fish.
Oh yea rams would look great in the tank, but I was going to add a school of neon tetras and some cory cats by my kids request.
Checked the water today ammonia 0,nitrites 0 and nitrates 5.0 ppm kind of surprised no ammonia spike.
Hopefully everything goes well:icon_wink
For a brighter light - a fuge ray would probably work pretty well, I would space it off the tank about 6" though for even coverage and lower light.

BUT - With your plant selection I might just see how they do,.. I know nothing about your light, but since you already have it, and your tank doesn't need that much growing out - it might work fine for you.

Nice looking tank!
Whiskey
Thanks Whiskey for the advice probably going stick with the Marineland light.
Well got home after work and tested the water pretty much the same ammonia 0, PH is 7.4,nitrites 0 and nitrates is between 0 and 5.0ppm tested nitrates twice.
But I did notice some white fuzzy stuff on one of my anubias nana I remember seeing same stuff on my first anubias in my Aqueon 8,but the leaves turned yellow and died first than the fuzzy stuff showed up which than the rhizones just melted .
My other anubias don't have that white fuzzy stuff and the one that has the fuzzy stuff looks healthy leaves are dark green. Anybody have any ideas what that stuff is.

Tank is cycled

Well finally have some time to post an update. The tank is cycled all the readings ammonia, nitrites are 0 and nitrates are between 10 and 20 for at least a week.
Overall the tank is doing fine the java fern is showing some new growth and the java moss, dwarf sag are growing well.
Have some negatives had one anubias nana got some fungus on the rhizome and just melted. The vals nothing new at least there not dying just gotta be patient probably have to adjust to the light.

I did put a black background no paint just taped one on. Yea looking at the pics can't see the background.
I was thinking of adding some neon tetras, pygmy corys and some ottos, but unfortunately I owe Uncle Sam taxes and estimate tax so gotta wait a little while.:icon_cry:
I got tired of looking at an empty tank went out and got six green neon tetras seem to be doing okay slowing venturing out and mostly hanging around the filter.

Ok here are some updated pictures of the tank on 3/28/14 added some flourish root tablets on that day.
Will keep track of the growth on the plants and the green neon tetras are doing fine eating well still kind of shy planning to get more this weekend.
Hopefully they come out more and I can get a picture.

Also my anubias petite is melting away :icon_cry: I don't know why the funny thing is its in the same location as the first anubias nana melted and died.

Did some tank maintenance today found another anubias melting sucks!!!
Maybe put some java fern instead.
I just got a Finnex planted + two days ago just installed it today wow a big difference compared to the Marineland Double Bright.
I had some anubias melting so I replaced them with three nana petites and added more java ferns.
The only negative thing I have to report is that the green neon tetras totally freaked out hopefully they can adapt.
