I think consistent stand height rather than tank height. And same color stands helps too. Same lighting will help but i wouldnt go that far.

You could get a longer stand and put more tanks on it so style and height of stand wouldnt matter too much.

If tanks and stands are different heights make the difference pretty obvious. A couple of tanks next to each other that are only an inch or two off look like "well, they almost match" :-(
But two tanks that are noticeably different sizes, look like "Hm, nice tanks, a big one and a small one"

Similarly, if the lighting, decor and fish are almost the same, but not quite it is "near miss" :-(
But if they are distinctly different it is "Hey, neat, an African Rift tank and an Amazon tank"

When possible the furniture should match. Or be really different, again, not an "almost matching".
Black stained or painted wood and black wrought iron have similarity (color) and difference (material) so could work together. Especially if the wood stand had the rustic/hardware showing (Simpson makes a series of cosmetic black brackets that would look great)
Cherry stained and Oak stained cabinets would not belong in the same room. Choose either the red or the gold, not both.

One thing that I think looks nice is tank uniformity. If you get an ADA tank, you could get the same tank or a different ADA tank that has different dimensions. I'm thinking of in the future adding another Mr Aqua 18x18x18 cube as I already have one, and so the tanks themselves will be the same but inside where it counts will be different.

Nobody will look at anything but the tanks the only thing consistent in my apartments is all black furniture. Who cares about the rest I'm sure people's attention will be directed more forwards the scape of your tank

I think height consistency is important, both the tank height and glass height. But if the difference is say more than 12" difference then I think that would be ok as well (would probably look good actually). But having 2-3 tanks off by 3-6 inches wouldn't look very nice.

Consistent stand designs and lights would almost be a requirement to look nice too.

I think that having stands consistent with furniture and other stands is the most important. Other factors such as equipment don't really seem as important to me. If the tanks are right next to each other then you probably want them to be similar size and height, but if they're on different walls of the room then I don't think height is as important.

Having the stand's level before filling the tank's would be my primary concern.
Folk's would peer into a bath tub if it held fish/plant's.
Aesthetic's aren't as important to most.It's the fishes/plant's that catch the eye IMHO.

I'm going to set up my "fish room" in the basement soon, and I'm thinking that it will be best to build a stand specifically for this purpose, that will hold my multiple tanks. Likely it won't be very many though. A 20L freshwater, a 3.4g planted, and a 10g saltwater.

I'm going to make it a corner stand, the bottom will be mostly dedicated to storage, and I will try to incorporate some sort of sitting area with a working space dedicated to working on fish stuff such as making coral frags and other things. It's easier than carrying stuff over the floor to the kitchen counter...

So really having multiple tanks in a room is a nice opportunity for some consolidation. I would really consider building a single stand to house those tanks.

I have a rack, and I would never do it again, unless it was for temporary holding tanks (like during rescapes or other tank movements) or if I opened a store or breeding operation and raceways were the only way to make it manageable.

+1 I have 5 tanks in my little office. Different stands/styles/sizes. When people walk in the only thing I hear is "oh wow, look at that tank" meaning the 55 that is planted. I think half of them don't even notice there are other tanks in the room.

This is very true. If you have a larger tank and then some smaller tanks in the vicinity, most people when they walk into the room for the first time will only pay attention to the big one. So it really depends on what type of setup you have and what you're trying to accomplish.

I plan on converting one wall of my garage into a multi rack setup. Tucked away you might not care as much but then again perhaps you would. I will have 4 40g w/sumps, a 55g grow out and a 29g quarantine as my setup. I can't base my setup off tank heights but I can at least make the stand flow to the next section of tanks. I will end up having a 10ft long stand once all said and done.
