I have an old 55 gallon out in the garage with about 5" deep worth of Soilmaster Select in it. My plants did fine in it, but it was very light weight and I really didn't like the color of it.

So I want to set up a 40 gallon long with MTS base. Could the Soilmaster be my clay part of the mix? If not would it hurt or benefit adding it to the mix.

I will top with black sand plus Eco Complete from a smaller tank.

I would just be worried that the SMS would eventually float to the top. I would just try to find powdered red clay, its normally fairly easy to find.
