MTS + RO water, GH booster needed?

965 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  pandapr
I'm starting a 75g with MTS, RO water, CO2...

Do I need Gh booster? How much?
I know that adding tap water might also be done.
Thanks for the help!

You should never be using RO water alone when you are setting up an aquarium. RO water is usually mixed with tap water to bring down the hardness/alkalinity of the tap water, or, the RO water may be reconstituted with some minerals.

In your case, you will definitely need GH booster (in addition to other things) if you are planning to use RO water alone (which is not recommended).
Thanks! I understand about not using 100% RO.
I'm adding minerals plus 5g of tap water. Water changes and top off will be 50/50 RO and tap water.
My tap water is very hard, this is why I'm using RO
so I can keep softwater plants/fish.

The questions are:
How much GH booster? Considering it will be around 65g of water.
What range (degrees) should I attemp?
Any other thing needs to be added to the water?
Thanks
I would do one of the 2 things you have going on there. Either use RO/Tap, or RO/GH builder. 2-6* on both levels is fine if your looking for target levels, but nothing needs to be spot on here.

Orlando, thanks for the useful information! :proud:

Thanks O & Crispino for your help. I'm going the RO/GH method.
This also may be helpful for other people so here is what O sent me:

To raise mineral content/general hardness with (GH) by 1 meq/L (3 dH), add 16 g (1 tablespoon) for every 80 L (20 G)
Its normal for the salts to take there time to dissolve completely
