My stepdaughter mentioned wanting a MP3 player for Christmas this year. I've been doing a bit of research and am coming up somewhat empty-handed. I don't want to get her an iPod, mainly because I'm too cheap to buy something that nice for a 12-year-old. Maybe when she gets a little older, but not right now. Her great uncle gave her an iPod shuffle and she broke it within a month or so. She's not going to be super picky about sound quality, but I'd prefer something that won't sound like complete crud. If anyone has some suggestions, here are my main criteria. I figured there are a lot of techno-geeks on here that can help me with their own personal experiences. :)

  • Durable. This kid is hard on stuff.
  • Ability to decide what song(s) to play. I wouldn't be surprised if she killed the shuffle due to this.
  • Economical. If she drops it in a sink or whatever, I don't want to be bemoaning the fact that she just killed a pricey piece of equipment.
  • User-friendly. She's pretty good with electronics, but I'm not sure how she'd be at complicated downloading.
Thanks in advance!

Recommend the Sansa clip+ . Got one and it's been through heavy drops, washer, and dryer. Yes it is still working, so if that's not what you called used/abused then I don't know what. :)

Hi J.

I have nursed a first generation ipod until last year when the hard drive finally died, along with my decade worth of songs collected. RIP. and have moved onto an ipod touch.

However, the two models which i commonly read about in the sub $50 range are the coby mp620 (mp3 player/fm radio) and the sandisk sensa clip. both seem very popular on amazon and come in a variety of colors which should make it more attractive to youngins.

i hope one of these two suggestions fit the bill. I know what you are going through and know that my heart goes out to ya and all the great things you do.

Hi guys! Thanks for the recommendations! I think I'll go with the Sansa clip. It looks like a nice little unit. I had one of the first gens and it's still working (or probably is, if I could find it!), so I can only imagine they are better now.

acitydweller, I have been looking at those new iPod touches. We're at my in-laws and my step-brother-in-law was picking one out for his sister for Christmas. Swanky little things! Now I want one. ;-)

Off to Amazon...
