Mossy Vals?

1728 Views 15 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  BettaBettas
Does anyone have any tips for keeping moss of my vals? I am growing maribo moss (yes thats what moss balls are made of) on my drifter wood but I dont want it to be on my vals! I am open to sucker fish suggestion and new light hours. It is a discus tank so the temperature is usually 82-83 Fahrenheit.

marimo algae balls take about your lifetime to grow 6 inches or so (rough estimate), your dealing with some other algae... and marimo isn't a moss its a type of Algae.

Definitely not fissidens, there are no leaves. That is BBA, black beard algae. It so happens it can be greenish under certain circumstances.

It was most likely triggered by the high organic load from the melting plants and old wood.

Stop your filter and put a little bit of Excel on it... It should turn white/red in a day or so. Actually, take the wood out and treat it all over. Vallisneria are somewhat sensitive to Excel.

Sae may it eat but they much prefer fish food and other types of algae to it.

With the exception of some Blue Green algae (produce cyanotoxin) I don't think any algae is bad per say. They tend to grow in places we don't want them and spread very fast, like over plants. They also use the plants' nutrients.

But ultimately, they are photosynthetic organisms so they act like plants for your aquarium, some even grow in conditions no plant would grow.

So this happened...

I saw some moss or something growing on my drift wood and I thought "Oh that looks like maribo moss I'll let it grow. Now I think its Black Beard Algea and I let this happen. Its growing all over all three of my drift wood peices. HELP

Doesn't look bad if it only stays on the wood.

I am guilty of letting it grow too.
In case you missed it /forgot about it .

Same question, same answer. Doing the same thing will give you the same outcome.

You actually also have some Cladophora right at the bottom of the upper branch. Same treatment. I suggest doing it fast until in spreads the love.

Honestly, the algae looks better than the plants. Throw out the vals and cabomba, buy some more driftwood and just roll with it.
