I'm trying to do some research on planting and the use of Moss. So far I've found:


Moss is mostly used to keep shrimp / newborn stock safe from bigger fish.

Tying Moss to Hardscape
Moss walls
Carpeting

My questions are:

Does Carpeting simply involve sticking clumps of Moss into the substrate?
Should I look into getting some kind of moss mat or something?

If Moss is used as a Carpet, will it get dirty easily from Algae or weighed down by mulm etc?

I've had some success with laying some java moss out semi-buried in the substrate, however it seems to work better (for me) if I tie a piece to a rock and bury the rock with the tuft sticking out. My experience also points to moss collecting the muck that naturally accumulates in tanks. This can be dealt with by mussing (physical harassment/shaking) the moss or by lightly pushing a vac into the clump.

The only algae I've ever had attack my mosses has been hair algae and SAE's seem to do a good job of tanking care of that.

All of my experience is with Java Moss so ymmv.

I've never had success of making a moss lawn. They seem to want to grow upwards than sideways. That's just my experience though. I think a moss wall is easier. All you need is a lot of moss to start.

to make a moss carpet:
-buy as much moss as you need, it works best if you hae enough for the whole carpet at once. i reccomend java, taiwan, weeping, or xmass moss.
-get flat, thin small peices of slate to cover the whole area you wanted covered in moss.
-tie moss on slate
-place slate to fite together as closely as possible.
-wait a few monthes for it grow in. you will need to vaccuum the moss to keep it clean.

I think I'm just going to stick to keep the Moss on Rocks and Wood for now. I tied up alot of Moss to some stuff today. Wasn't hard at all.. I figured it would be harder since the Moss would float!

So i took the moss outta my tank earlier this week and put it in a bowl.. I tried to rub as much of the algae off with my hands as possible.. Anything else I should be to get it clean before I put it back in a tank.

Dip it in one of the favorite dips.

H2O2, PP, Bleach solutions all come to mind.

Shrimp are great for keeping moss clean. When I had moss in my 10g, the cherries and amanos I kept in there picked over it constantly.

Some types of moss don't attach so well. Do a search for stainless steel mesh, and you should come up with some examples of flame moss carpets.

What if Moss has been left out of watr for a few hours. Does it still stay alive?

Try to keep it moist. If it dries out fully, it's not good for the moss. Depends on the extent of dessication.
