Monte Carlo due for a trim?

You can absolutely trim that, and it is a good idea. When left alone the lower leaves will yellow due to lack of light. When it grows even thicker, the whole carpet could actually lift up.
That said, I would not take it down to the substrate. Maybe take 1/3 or so of it away to keep it growing healthy.
