I have a 20 gallon tall tank and I'd like to get two or three balloon mollies to put in it. Those would most likely be the only fish.

(Everything is still in the planning stage right now, as I don't even have water in the tank! I plan to "seed" it from a tank at work to get a proper jump start on cycling.)

But I've read a bunch of different things online as to the minimum gallons of water that mollies require, ranging from 5 gallons to 30 gallons. I'm guessing the truth is somewhere in the middle.

What say you?

They say 1 inch of fish per gallon and i don't know mollies to be "roaming" fish like rainbows or tetras so I think it's pretty safe to say your 20 should be plenty of space for 3 mollies. They're prolific breeders from what i know so keep that in mind.

Edit: +1 for Louisville, i lived in Fairdale for 4 years before moving back to Colorado where I'm originally from.

Thank you. That's what I was thinking. It's been 10 years or more since I kept fish, so I didn't know if the "1 inch per gallon" rule was still considered valid or not. Mollies are relatively small fish, and I like them.

Louisville is nice. The whole area is growing enormously since the city-county merger at the turn of the century. I don't know when you lived here, but if it was before 2003/2004, there has been a lot of growth now. People don't seem to think that KY has any urban areas, but uh...we definitely do now. lol
