Missing Shrimp

610 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  spudgunman
I am a bit confused, I had 17 shrimp I put into my tank. I have seen one (possibly two) that were dead.. I think I saw the same dead one twice. I have a single assassin and it should be ok with pond snails and MTS which are happy planted in the tank.

I do have two good hidden areas that are hard to see into.

But my problem is that ever time I count my shrimp I can only find about 7-8 of them. Where is the 7-10 missing shrimp? Do they hide in the hidden areas? I find it odd that at every shrimp count I get 7-8 not 12-14 which would make more sense. But I see no disembodied shrimp heads or tails.

Any idea - would shrimp eat shrimp that died 100%? or would a single assassin eat 100% of a shrimp? if I had death I would expect to see some "tails and snouts" in the corners of the tank..

snails and shrimp eat dead shrimp. What kind of shrimp?

Do you have fish?

What are your params?
Shrimp are very good at hiding. In my 20 gallon I have a Wisteria plant in the back corner that we nicknames the "Shrimp Tree" as there was always a minimum of 6 shrimp in it. If there are hiding spots you will likely never see them all at one time. It's just their nature.

As far as I know assassins don't eat shrimp. Maybe they would go after one if starving. Odds are if you aren't seeing bodies they aren't dead, just hiding.

do they eat them 100%? like would the whole body and "skin" vanish?

RCS

ph7-7.8 swing due to plants, KH/GH~6, temp mid 70's, 90g, Am/nitrite=0 nitrAte=5ppm, no fish at this time.
Yepper, they'll eat the whole thang.

Params look good for rcs, however in a 90g they have plenty of places to hide as well.

After saying that, do you dose ferts and have co2?
I had 13 shrimp in a 5 gallon and I could see only 3 sometimes. They are old hat at hiding, especially from fish. If you have a HOB maybe check inside of it as well, I had some ignore it but others were insistent on going in through the outflow.
no significant ferts (minimal dose once a month - my plants are all showing quality slow growth, no added Co2 out of minimal excell dose, I dont do water changes so have water column co2 from decay)

thanks for the feedback, sounds like I just need to look harder or add more shrimp!! I will check the filter my outflow is in a area that they could climb into it I guess.
Yeah, if the filter intake could suck them up, it could be problematic. Good luck to ya. :)
