Here's a post I saved on how to mineralize soil. I've never done it myself, so I have no idea if there are better or easier ways to do it. You can also find it for sale if you're doing a small tank.

Every tank I have with dirt is just top soil from the BBS I dumped in a tank, planted, filled waited for a while added fish. Never had a problem.
