I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience replacing (or partially replacing) internal filter media (which is usually sponge) with any loose ceramic media or similar? I know that there are some internal filters out there which have specialised media made specifically for those filters, containing ceramic or carbon.

Canister filters aren't really an option in this case.

Can place anything you want in filter's but if tank was/is planted,,I would let plant's perform biological filtration and just use foam in the filter's.
