probably not but how deep is the tank?

a standard 10 gallon tank.

I was also contemplating one of those cheap hoods, with 2 spiral CFL bulbs. im assuming that'd probably be much better

use 1 spiral and youre closer to low light

why not get a standard hood with 1 T8 bulb? that would put you into low light
