ok, so this might be a no brainer however, I am setting up a new 55G tank that I purchased from a friend. He had it as a Marine tank. I now have the sand and gravel from the salt water tank in a 5 gallon bucket. It is almost full.
My question is if I rinse the gravel really, really, well in fresh water can I use it in the planted tank or would it be better to start with fresh gravel or flourite??
If I do go fresh what do you recommend and how much do I need in inches to make this work correctly?

I set up a couple small tanks using marine substrate. If I wanted to keep things in high KH and GH it would have been great. Both were always "off the scale" when I tested. Took them both down and started over about a year later because of that.
