super glue does not hold as well as i was lead to believe... it held for a week and dissolved... i glued a marble to the bottom of a sponge filter to keep it from floating and it did not hold...

Well it does lol they where not bought sponge filters... they are diy filters 1 is made out of sponge I bought from Petco. The other one is a sponge I bought from dollar tree to try out... both float even though the one from Petco is a filter material sponge.

Use epoxy glue, it holds very well under water. You mix the 2 parts out of the water, wait until it starts to harden but is still semi-liquid, and you can apply it directly under water if you need to.

put a river rock inside the sponge and a couple on top, once you use it a bit it will sink without them.

I'm going for a boulder less aqua scape its a good idea though..

Or glue the sponge to a 4 inch ceramic tile.

While the glue was holding the clear half marbles I was using worked very well and looked pretty awesome.. besides that the nearest place to me that sells tiles is 2 hours away one way. Thanks for the idea though.
