Lily Pipes for Zoomed 501

5684 Views 24 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  PhilipS
Looking for Lily Pipes for a Zoomed 501 canister. The issue I'm running into is the size of most pipes are way too large for an 8" cube, and I have not stumbled upon anything on Gizzogle yet.

Anyone using lily pipes on a small setup?

Height of the pipes are too big. I found a couple on Ebay that had the right diameter, but they are 6.5" deep which would mean the inlet is in my substrate.
Check out our forum sponsor: Southern Oak Aquatics - they have 'half pipes' , pricey.

Another option is to get acrylic or SS and cut them to size. Still, not cheap.

Thanks! I'll poke around and see what they have got. I think I might have stumbled on a product, to fall back on just in case.

Aquaticmagic has 9mm pipes with an inlet that goes down 4.5". I have the same pipes on my zoomed.

Not sure of tubing diameter for your Zoomed canister but I got a glass lily pipe set for less than $20 & shipping was free. Try Aliexpress & look for Fischer Chemical who makes size S 9mm lily pipes (see "Custom OTS filter"). Both DoAqua & Cal Aqua Labs make short intake pipes but they are 13mm. I have a 8" (20cm) cube filtered by a Ehiem 2211. In the past, had DoAqua mini violet pipes in the tank but when I accidentally broke the intake & not being able to see the pipes anyway due to the plant layout, used the Ehiem green pipes & cut the intake to the proper size (check "MacAquarium" for pics). Hope that helps. :bounce:

How tall is the Zoomed 501?

That's a good deal for glass pipe.

ADA Do!Aqua expect to pay $50 each.

Hey Archer,

One of our rep's took a quick snapshot of our VIV 10mm/13mm pipes for you to get a better understanding of the height of our pipes. This is a VIV Mini Violet 13mm inlet pipe & VIV Mini 10mm outflow pipe. His pipes have a 3" clearance in an 8 1/2 inch tall aquarium. So you would have a 2 1/2 inch clearance in your 8" cube aquarium.

If you need anymore sizing information & pictures, let me know.

I stumbled upon these on Amazon. This was my failover plan if I couldn't find anything else smaller/nicer.

Is there any place in Oahu that carry anything close? I'll be flying back home, family is in Pearl City, in a few weeks.

I believe it's almost 7" tall which means I'll have to rig up my piping with elbows no matter the lily pipes I go with.

I'll poke around and look at some more photos of these for sure. I'm trying to mock up the hosing right now, and since I know some measurements of the pipes you guys have I'll have a much better idea. Thanks! Most likely will be hearing from me in the next few weeks.
FWIW, if you're setting the filter next to the tank (at the same level), you can just "loop" the tubing instead of using a bunch of 90s.
I'd rather use 90's rather than looping it to reduce clutter as well as lock the lily pipes where I want them rather than having the hoses pushing them around.

Sounds like you got it all figured out, please update us on what you come up with. I have a similar setup, always interested in a better way of doing things.

You can try Aquascapes (moved to Nimitz). Don't know of any other LFS that carry glassware. Good luck. :bounce:

Just got mine from ebay too. Look for seller AquariumHK. Got for $20.73 free shipping!
Great quality too!

Came came in fast too!
90 degree elbows reduce flow rates.

What is the smallest external canister?

Is the Azoo hog worth it or too noisy?

I'll be playing around with this later this month, so I appologize early for the delay on info on this. I'll be sure to post up what I settle on.

Thanks! I knew they were in Aiea, was hoping to run in while waiting to pickup some Katsu plate lunch and Young's.

Yep, 90 degrees do mess with flow rates. They do make 90 degrees with gradual turns rather than a sharp 90 which should solve that. The 501's are the smallest I know of. The Azoo's are much taller and the design doesn't appeal to me. I don't see how the system filters where as the Zoomed has a baffle to force flow through all media.
Interesting. Thanks for the review of the hog. I need a filter for the MrAqua 3G.

What's the diameter of the Zoomed 501 or Zoomed Nano 10 hoses (TCN-30)?

See thread http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/showthread.php?t=69792

I measured my ADA Do!Aqua mini violet pipe set (MP-1) and the intake pipe is 5.25" deep .

Actually sits right over the Monte Carlo.
Finnex PX-360 is another good mini canister filter.

OVT, when I looked at those they were the same dimensions as the Azoo. That being the case I ditched that idea. Since I have two 501's from projects years back I figured I'd stick with them.
