Lighting Newb

Hey all,

I'm a newb with a 33 g tank... bought some eco complete and a friend gave me a 65w pc... I wanna grow some hc and was told at lfs that I need about 5 watts per gallon... he pointed me to a couple of models he had but couldn't really explain what they were or why... while I'm cheap I would rather buy something sensible that would last... can anyone offer any suggestions?

thanks in advance

5 wpg I hope is an exageration! That's INSANE lighting. Growing high light plants normally means 2.5-3 wpg w/ good reflectors. I've never grown HC b4 but you may be able to do a good job w/ what you have. I'll yeild to folks w/ more experience there. Just remember that if you're setting up a high light tank, pressurized CO2 is going to be a must with a 30g ish' tank. That's from experience!

Well, for smaller tanks, 5wpg isn't insane at all(have 19 watts over my 3 gallon, used to be 27 but it didn't get as good growth for some reason). But yeah, depending on dimensions, you might need more light.
I was talking about 5 wpg on a 33G. I know below 10G the wpg rule kinda breaks down based on lumen's and square footage. But yes, 5 wpg in a 33G tank is INSANE lighting. The 2-3 wpg rule is right on point from about 10-90G tanks, maybe even up to 100.

5wpg on a 33 is way too much. I have a 29 with maybe 3wpg and stuggle with algea and what not. was it a lfs or petco / petsmart that said that. Also they probobly said that so they can sell you the new light they just got in for hundreds of dollars:confused:

Did you tell em your tank dimensions? Maybe it's cause he has a tall hex tank or something, lol.
Welcome! I have absolutely no advice, but cool name :) No, seriously, too much light = algae = much frustration/hair pulling. I'd say if it's a regular rectangular tank, you're good to go, but that's just me.
yes its a rectangle tank... I can't find any of my tape measures to measure it... the pet store I was at was a local shop, with a basement full of planted tanks... I guess he wants to sell me some lighting then eh... I explained to him that the tank I had was rectangle even showed him one that I thought was similiar... in the end I have 1.96 watts per gallon... I guess the best thing to do is just buy some and see... he also mentioned that the yeast/sugar co2 injector that I bought is useless and should just throw it away... and buy a co2 bottle type...
Not sure I understand when you said you have 1.96 wpg and the best thing you can do is try some and see, unless you were talking about planting some hc and seeing how it makes out. I can say, however, that I'm inclined to agree with him as far as the yeast CO2 is concerned in a 33G tank. Matter of fact, I would submit that if you do have trouble growing hc, your CO2 is more of your problem then your lighting. I found it to be impossible in my 30G to achieve a sufficient level of CO2 with a yeast can. Matter of fact, right b4 I bought my CO2 system, I had 5 yeast cans running and still couldn't get there. Then I bought this:

Milwaukee CO2 regulator w/ auto pH controller

and absolutely love it. IMO, it's the best money I've spent on my tank thus far. I run it through a DIY in-line reactor on the return side of my cannister exactly like this:

Rex's DIY in-line reactor

That's my experience. For what it's worth.

Thanks, can you repost the milwaukee link it seems to be broken...
Let's see if this works any better:

I would think trying to grow a pot of HC first would be a lot cheaper than buying a new light and finding that it is not needed. $4 vs. $100
I think 1.96wpg would be ok also. I agree that co2 is more important. Maybe the yeast co2 with excel additions would work if you cant use pressurized co2. My HC loves excel, and I dose it often, even though I have pressurized co2 also.

I wouldnt consider myself to have super high lighting, but my HC does well, and I attribute it to excel, co2, and aquasoil.(as well as EI dosing--which helps everything when using co2).

good luck!
