I really want to try and avoid a high tech tank, but I am thinking my 36" 39w Trio fixture may not be best for a low tech tank. Right now I am around 1.5Wpg...

I am keeping mostly crypts, Java's and a few vals.

I am wondering what everyone would suggest for a semi-low tech tank?

I want to stay away from co2 injection.

My budget is staying below $100, but I have a feeling I will go over that.. lol :icon_roll

Your current lighting (I'm assuming 3 bulbs X 39w each) seems quite reasonable for a low/med light low-tech tank, with a lighting period of say, 8 hrs/day. What type of bulbs ?
Have you not been having success with that ?.
It'll grow many plants well, many more than the few you mentioned.
My 75 gal tank has only 2 X 39w T5 HO bulbs, and my med. planted set-up is doing quite well.

I asked hoppy ...the light guru here ...the same question. He reccomended Catalina fixtures to me .I imagine a nice long one could give you nice medium light...a single bulb t5ho will be sufficient at 21 inches high. they're quite affordable and under your budget I might add.
