I am a complete noob to this so what lights would you recommend for a 9" tall 16" long 5 gallon? I am aiming for medium light.

If you use a clip light you can get some adjustments. I have seen some lights that are great and some that are something I should be concerned of too much light in my 45G. Others are a joke. It's frustrating.

I think you must consult some professional for exact specifications.
I have a Finnex Planted Plus clip on and a Finnex stingray clip on (Medium/Low respectively). Both are very good lights. There is also a 12" Finnex Planted Plus that should put you in high light range for a 5 gallon. I have a 36" Planted + for my 36 gallon and have to cover up a few of the LEDs to cut back on the lighting.

I'm sure you can find PAR data on the net if you look around.
16" Finnex Stingray might do the trick. The Stingray clip-on is on the low side of low light and you'd be getting a shadow on the other side of the tank. The Planted + clip-on would also be a viable option but I can't say for certain how much light that would give you and PAR information is not readily available.

LED clip light or a desktop lamp
