I am planning to setup a plant only low-medium tech 2 gallon nano cube (7.87" x 7.87" x 7.87") for my desktop. I am not able to find good information on suitable lighting and filter (filter mainly for the flow). Please advice on to setup. Also the cube alone would cost me $60 so please let me know if there is a cheaper option. I am looking for a 2.5 gallon cube or smaller.

Depending on what you want to spend, you could go different routes. Cheap route being a tetra whisper filter with no filter media and a clip on desk lamp (I use a $14 drafting lamp from walmart) with a daylight cfl. If you want to get fancy, you could run a canister with spin pipes and finnex makes the stingray (an led clip light for planted tanks)

You could try an Azoo Palm or Deep Blue Nano power filter. I have a Deep Blue Nano on a 3 gallon Betta tank and it's perfect and has an adjustable flow. You should be able to find for less than $10 too. I think I got mine for $7 or $8 at a local store, and I've seen them online for similar.

I'm pretty sure the Azoo palm was phased out a while back by the Azoo Mignon 60, which both filter 60L per hour. The Mignon 60 is reported to be quieter, I've not owned a palm so I can't verify. I just replaced my Mignon 60 for a Mignon 150, which has up to 120L per hour. My tank is a 2.5gal. all of these filters are less than $15.

I'm currently using this for my 1.1 gallon vase.

It is a little more powerful than the other filters others have mentioned. But its still adjustable. Here's a few pictures for size reference.

I use my LED desk lamp, and recently added an ExoTerra f150 sponge filter. It's a quieter, sturdier version of the Elite Mini, and the flow is fully adjustable. If not that, there's also a powerhead version of this pump that doesn't have the sponge compartment. That one's absolutely tiny.
