Lighting duration and algae

I'm trying to reduce my algae growth in my 75 gal but increase plant growth.

Since algae seems to thrive with longer photoperiods, would it be advisable to reduce photoperiod from 8 to 6 hrs and increase the light during the 5 hours?

1/2 EI dosages, CO2 injection, AHS 110watt, weekly water changes.

Sounds good.. You'd have to experiment with that.. You'll get whole bunch of different answers.
You'd need more wattage on your 75G..150-170 watts perhaps.
I have a 32watt x2 t8 overdriven fluorescent fixture that I will use for the extra light for now.
I've never heard of anyone having success with a 6 hour photoperiod.

"Since algae seems to thrive with longer photoperiods..." This is an overgeneralization. I have seen no algae growth in tanks with 14 hour photoperiods and lots of algae in tanks with 8 hour photoperiod. Clearly, other factors are involved besides the duration of light.

1/2 EI dosing is perhaps too much nutrients considering that you have less than 2WPG. With that light intensity, I would think you need a longer photoperiod, not a shorter one.

HOW MUCH co2 are you injecting? PPM?
40ppm
moderately planted with swords, crypts, and stems
What kind of algae do you have? The currently accepted causes and remedies are here: http://www.rexgrigg.com/Algae1.html Note that high light only causes green water. If you don't have this, then your problem lies elsewhere than quantity of light.

Swords and Crypts are root feeders, you may consider root tabs to help increase plant vigor (possibly reducing/eliminating your algae issues in the process).
Very minimal GSA.
Mostly hair algae. Possibly a little BBA.

I forgot to mention, I do have a few root tabs at the base of the largest plants.

Uh, I do. I know people with 5 hour light cycles that grow HC very well. Lowering the light cycle will get rid of the hair algae.
