Lighting and Shrimp

885 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  A Hill
I have been searching for info on lighting and inverts and have actually found little info at the forums (that I could find) I am curious as to if some types of light are more or less beneficial to our shrimps.

What started my curiosity was mention somewhere on the net of the 50/50 Reef/Sun lights with both long and (stronger in) short wavelengths being more beneficial to inverts including shrimp. Any thoughts on this?

I don't think they care... Unless it grows algae for them to eat.
I was just curious due to the fact that saltwater aquariums with corals and other inverts are said to need different lighting. I know why, just wondering if lighting was also important to freshwater inverts.

Thanks for your response, Bill
good question I second that to find out.
From what I understand...

Our shrimp aren't photosynthesizing so they do not need light for food production.

BUT!

There where studies done with animal stress in the 1950s or somthing like that (maybe 1920s) And if you've been to Epcot at disney world you will notice one of their greenhouses is actually all lighted in Red light the idea was that it reduces the animal's stress.

I'm not sure how much if any it does but they said there that its nothing major.

Mine do seem to feel more secure with shade from floaters or tall plants going over the top.

I am guessing as well that even though the inverts themselves do not benefit directly from different lighting that the environment (ie.Tank) may or may not support different types of bio matter and other organisims beneficial to shrimp as food depending on the light provided..... That only makes since right?

More than likely any tube good for growing plants will also be good for the rest, but my curiosity makes me wonder....

Wish I could find the article I read again, it was interesting and had to due with the penetration of light into water and the effect on different wavelengths at different depth from aquarium lights...

Well if we as humans benefit from exposure to UV rays (vitamin D woo!), then I'm sure there are similar processes for other creatures

Interesting topic!
That's a very interesting question. I have heard the japanese use zoo med reptisun light in CRS tanks. They believe its better for the shrimp shell.
i dont know if it helps the shrimps at all but i used to have my rcs at work in a biorb that was illuminated by a tiny incandescent bulb, the shrimp all looked clear even the females. recently i moved them into an ada mini-m with a 26w spiral fluorescent and now they are red as all get out.

We as humans actually don't significantly benefit from UV exposure we've now learned, Skin cancer is fun stuff right? Of course not.

I believe it was in the 30s or so that they encouraged kids to get out into the sun to get their D3 processed. Now they say its best to stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible and if you do go out lather on as much sun screen as possible.

I've actually read quite a bit on the UV/D3 topic because of my interest in Poison Dart frogs, generally you trace it down to diet and not UV exposure.

I could pull up all the specifics, or I can just say feed your shrimp correctly with a varied diet and you will be fine, UV won't hurt but it will heat the tank up more and it may cause unseen negative effects with possible positive effects.

If anyones really interested I'll get all the facts sometime.
