light requirement for 2.5g

hi guys! been a longtime forum lurker but first time poster :D

setting up a low tech, low maintenance 2.5g nano tank as an anniversary gift to my gf. will have java moss as foreground carpet, tennelus as background carpet, and anubias nana for my midground plants. might use some rocks on the midground too. still thinking about bacopa to cover up my internal filter hehe

how many watts would this tank need? is CO2 also required or optional?

thanks and more power to plantedtank.net!

I would go with 10 watts. I don't know about tennelus though. I have 20 watts over a 2.5 g and I only dose Flourish, Potassium, and Excel.
thanks for the reply! what do you mean by you don't know about tennelus. aesthetically? or light wise?
Yeah, I agree w/ sandiegoryu, you should probably go with 10 watts. After all, you dont want to have the tank overgrowing all the time or it wouldnt be a low tech...

Shouldnt u be posting this in the lowtech section... Just a thought...
was torn where to post this one haha. but i decided to post here since there are more nano experts here :)
good choice! youve come to the right place... Whatever suits you... you can always ask the low techians!

As for plants, why not try some petite anubias in front of the larger ones that you already want to create a slope affect?

Also, in my opinion, Jave moss should only be used for fry to feed off of, not as a focal point in any aquarium! But, it isnt for me to say... But in case you change your mind, why not step up the light little and go for some riccia or HC(they look 1,000,000,000,000,000 times better than java moss!)?
BTW, Welcome to the forum...
thanks speshall*k! id like to do more sophisticated plants but the thing is il be leaving this in my gf's condo, il be there only about twice a week, thrice at the most. that's why im going for a low tech, low maint tank :)

nice suggestion with the anubias! will look into other anubias available here :)

as for the java moss, you think i should just go for the tennelus carpet all over? :)

thanks again!
I dont know about tennelus as in lighting requirements.
Definitely... It will have a more... professional look. Your GF will be proud. lol!

this is a great pic of an anubias petite!

"For a grassier look, try Echinodorus tenellus or Eleocharis acicularis. The
latter has very fine leaves; both propagate across the tank rapidly; they both
need thinning or at least controlling unless you want them all over." aquote about Tennellus off the net! nothin on light yet...
"One of the most commonly available foreground plants is the pygmy chain sword (Echinodorus tenellus). There are several varieties and/or subspecies of E. tenellus, including one that turns a nice rusty red color under bright light. All forms are quite variable in leaf size, shape and color depending on conditions, so it is difficult to tell them apart in the aquarium unless they can be grown side by side.

With adequate lighting and a fine substrate, pygmy chain sword will quickly cover the foreground of your tank. It reproduces by runner, and will need to be thinned from time to time by carefully cutting the runners and pulling out the excess growth. If this is not done, you will start to see a number of transparent dying leaves from overcrowding. E. tenellus is a heavy root feeder and needs a constant iron source, so you will probably need to use a liquid trace element supplement, as well as laterite, soil and/or plant food tablets in the substrate." ---http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/ah_main/aug1997.html .... This should help you out!
is there something bigger than a nana? what im visualizing is put that one behind the nana, then the petite in front, of course with a triangle effect from the left in mind :)

will research on acicularis. i know tennelus is a bit low maint, except for the trimming.

on other forums they've suggested that more than the 3wpg requirement is needed for a nano. but if i go too high, might have to do CO2 as well.
Dont do CO2... within a week you wont be able to see into the tank b/c of all the algae problems.

Is there something bigger than the nana?... Yes! the anubias coffeefolia is one... here's a tip: just go up to that little google search bar on the top left, and type anubias. There will be hyndreds of varieties that pop up-try it!
yep ive used google image search for anubias, but they all look the same size hahaha needed someone that has seen it in real life :D
not google image... Google toolbar on top left of every CP in the world!!!!!!!!!!!
Type anubias... Dont press enter! it will give you its guess as to what type of anubias that you are looking for. Then select one, such as anubias nana petite, and up comes the info baby!
i think its in the top right of mine wahahaha
Wierd... Wait are you playing games with me?
Cuz if you are i will Kick your @ss via internet... LOL

I have pressurized co2 on my 2.5 gallon planted and it does not have that much algae problems. Just planted it like crazy and throw in one or two amano shrimps. Oh and do small water changes weekly or every other week.
hey born2love, what plants you got in it? :)
