i'm actually in the mindset to replace my lighting. i have 2 hooded light fixtures, 1 that has a single fluorescent bulb and the other is a double bulb. They are all 25w bulbs and all normal output. I found this on amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/handle-buy-box/ref=dp_start-bbf_1_glance
and wonder if it would be a better deal? here are the specs:

- One 39 Watt SlimPaq 10K and one 39 Watt Freshwater T5 HO fluorescent lamp
- Dimensions: 36" x 5.5" x 2"
- 78 Watts
- Individually contoured reflectors
- Plastic mounting legs

i know that i need 2 x 55gallons = 110w would that be too high? i have HC and glosso and riccia in my tank.

Since you mention 2x55 and a 36 inch light, I'm guessing you have a ~55 breeder, 36x18x16 nominal dimensions. The light you are looking at would be fine for depth, but not necessarily for front to back lighting. Depending on the shape of the reflectors you will probably have low light or shadows at the extreme(s).

The watt per gallon rule of thumb came about when T12 was the common fluorescent size. It works reasonably well for T8 as well, but not well or not at all for T5, spiral compact, T5HO, Power Compact, LED, or MH lighting.
