If you run relatively low CO2 concentration during the day you can leave it on all the time. But, if you have high light intensity in your tank, and try to run the CO2 concentration as high as you can, if you leave it on during the lights off time, the ppm in the tank will go up, and possibly kill your fish, or at least cause them great stress. So, it is always best to shut off the CO2 at night.
