I need to light a 50ish gallon planted tank for as cheap as possible, but low maintenance and reliability take priority over cheapness. Because I'm setting this up in a high school and won't be able to take care of it as much as I could.

I'm going to assume this is going to be a low light no CO2 tank, Walmart has a 48inch shop light for $12. It holds 2 T8 bulbs. I have one on my 55 gallon, it works great and its dirt cheap. "Lights of America" is the light name I believe.
